Childhood Glaucoma

SIG Corner Editor: Hana Abouzeid

Childhood glaucoma is a rare but severe ocular condition that can result in irreversible vision loss if untreated. Its diagnosis and management are challenging due to its heterogeneity, diverse etiologies, and the unique anatomical and physiological considerations of the pediatric eye.

Projects Treatment modalities in Europe differ significantly depending on the country. We designed two surveys that were sent to childhood glaucoma specialists to answer key clinical questions. We are still lacking guidelines for the treatment of childhood glaucoma. The results of the two surveys will be presented at the next members' meeting in Thessaloniki. Furthermore, we are working on a White Paper that will provide recommendations, research findings, and treatment strategies for childhood glaucoma. The third project we are working on is the clinical comparison of two different circumferential surgical techniques in a multicentric study.

The search for EGS goal of “Paving the Way to Better Glaucoma Care” continues together with Outcome and other EGS Committees as well as SIGs, i.e. how to promote the best possible well-being and minimal glaucoma-induced visual disability in individuals with glaucoma within affordable healthcare systems. The views expressed are those of the author(s) and are not necessarily those of the EGS.
