The European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO), in collaboration with the EGS, wishes to both increase general as well as subspecialty care in Europe. To do this it is offering the opportunity for ophthalmologists with particular interest in glaucoma to have their knowledge and expertise acknowledged. It will be achieved by an EBO Glaucoma Subspecialty Exam. Successful candidates will be awarded a diploma: the Glaucoma Subspecialty EBO Diploma. This is expected to be recognized as a proof of advanced knowledge and competence in this field and contribute to raising the standards of glaucoma care in Europe.

Sitting the FEBOS – Glaucoma exam in 2025? Why not me?

The priority of the EGS is to improve education and training in glaucoma. One of the means to achieve this goal is the FEBOS – Glaucoma Exam (Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology Subspecialty exam in glaucoma) which has become since 2015 an important instrument promoting better harmonization and standardization of the education in the field of glaucoma within European countries. Since 2015 among a total of 95 applications, 64 candidates have sat the exam with a passing rate of 62.5%. Successful candidates obtained the FEBOS – Glaucoma diploma which is a guarantee and proof of high-level training and knowledge in the field of glaucoma. We encourage young ophthalmologists with interest in the field and having already completed a minimum 1-year training with focus in glaucoma to apply for the 2025 year’s session. The EGS is persuaded that the FEBOS – Glaucoma exam and diploma will pave the way for better care.

FEBOS – Glaucoma exam in 3 points

1) Who can apply for the FEBOS Glaucoma exam?
Ophthalmologists with a recognised diploma and title of specialist in Ophthalmology in their own country (being part of UEMS member and associated countries). The exam is promoting excellence, therefore it is recommended to apply after a period of 1 or preferably 2 years following either the EGS glaucoma fellowship (website) or other official glaucoma focused training.
2) What is the format of the FEBOS Glaucoma exam?
This one day exam is divided in two parts:
a) the written part in the morning: 80 MCQS run on tablets for 2.5 hours.
b) the oral (Viva voce) part in the afternoon: Six jury members interview each candidate for 10 min on various clinical cases; total duration for each candidate 60 min.
3) How to find the relevant information for the 2025 edition?
The FEBOS- Glaucoma exam will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, on October 2nd, 2025.
